UNCG announces women's basketball 2009-10 schedule
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Thirteen home games and a trip to face nationally ranked Ohio State highlight UNC Greensboro's 2009-10 women's basketball schedule, coach Lynne Agee announced Wednesday.
The Spartans, who went 13-18 overall and 9-11 in the Southern Conference last season, open the 2009-10 campaign with a home game against Morgan State on Nov. 14. Six of UNCG's first eight games are on the road.
A four-game road swing follows the Morgan State game, with UNCG kicking off the road trip at defending Big South champion Liberty on Nov. 17. The Spartans will face backyard rival High Point on Nov. 21, then head to Ohio to take on the defending Big Ten champion Buckeyes on Nov. 25. Ohio State finished in the top 10 in both major polls last season, checking in at 10th in the Associated Press' poll and ninth in the ESPN/USA Today poll.
UNCG wraps up the road trip at five-time defending Mid-American Conference champion Bowling Green on Nov. 27. The game against the Falcons will pit UNCG redshirt freshman Amy Clapper against her sister, Bowling Green senior Sarah Clapper. The squads also met last season in the UNCG Airport Marriott Thanksgiving Classic.
The Spartans briefly return home for a contest against Charleston Southern on Dec. 1, then kick off Southern Conference play at College of Charleston on Dec. 5. UNCG caps the road swing in New York with a contest at Fordham on Dec. 12.
UNCG begins a three-game homestand with its final non-conference opponent of the season when North Carolina Central comes to town on Dec. 16. Chattanooga (Dec. 19), last season's SoCon regular-season champion, and Samford (Dec. 21) round out the homestand.
Road games at Georgia Southern (Dec. 29), Davidson (Jan. 2) and Wofford (Jan. 8) are followed by another three-game stretch at home, as 2009 SoCon tournament champion Western Carolina (Jan. 11), Elon (Jan. 13) and Appalachian State (Jan. 16) will all come to Fleming Gymnasium.
The Spartans close the first half of the SoCon season at Furman on Jan. 19 before kicking off the back half of the league schedule with a home game against College of Charleston on Jan. 23. Georgia Southern makes its return trip to Greensboro on Jan. 25.
Games at Samford (Jan. 30) and Chattanooga (Feb. 1) are followed by home games against Davidson (Feb. 6) and Wofford (Feb. 12). The Spartans hit the road again for contests at Western Carolina (Feb. 16) and Appalachian State (Feb. 20), then host Furman in the home finale on Feb. 23. UNCG wraps up the regular season at Elon on Feb. 27.
The SoCon tournament will be held in Charlotte, N.C., this year from March 4-8.
"We're excited about this year's schedule," Agee said. "We've got some tough non-conference opponents lined up, and they should really help get us ready for Southern Conference play. We've got our work cut out for us, but if we play up to our potential this season, we should make some noise in the league. We're looking forward to getting out on the court and seeing what we can do."
The Spartans return 10 letterwinners from last season's team, including five of its top six scorers and 2008-09 SoCon Defensive Player of the Year Monique Floyd.
