Floyd named SoCon Defensive Player of the Year
SPARTANBURG, SC – UNC Greensboro sophomore Monique Floyd was named the Southern Conference's Defensive Player of the Year as voted by the league's coaches, the SoCon office announced Tuesday.
Floyd, a guard from Fairmont, NC, has amassed a career-best 45 steals on the season, and has anchored a Spartan defense that is allowing opponents to shoot just 37.2 percent, the second-best mark in the league.
UNCG has held opponents to fewer than 60 points 14 times on the season and has held three opponents to scores in the 30s. The Spartans (12-17, 9-11 SoCon) are flirting with the school record for opponent scoring average. This season's squad is allowing just 59.8 points per game, just a shade above the record mark of 59.7 set in 2001.
Floyd, an all-freshman team selection last season, was named the league's player of the week on Feb. 24 of this season.
UNCG, seeded seventh in the SoCon tournament, will take on 10th-seeded Wofford on Thursday in the second game of the day. Tipoff is set for approximately 5:30 p.m. in Chattanooga, TN.
