Spartans announce 2008-09 women's basketball schedule

GREENSBORO, NC - UNC Greensboro head women's basketball coach Lynne Agee announced the 2008-09 women's basketball schedule today. The slate features two early games with ACC opponents and is highlighted by a trip to the UC Irvine Tournament in December.

Following an exhibition warm-up against Guilford College on November 8, the Spartans will hit the road for three straight games, with the first two coming at Virginia Tech on November 14 and the second at Wake Forest on November 17.  The Spartans will wrap up their season opening road swing with a date with UNC Wilmington on November 20.

"We have a very ambitious schedule ahead, with some great challenges," said UNCG head coach Lynne Agee.  "We open at Virginia Tech and Wake Forest, taking the show on the road early.  Those early tests that make us better when we get to our conference schedule."

A pre-Thanksgiving meeting with High Point on November 24 leads to the UNCG Marriott Classic where the Spartans will play host to Bowling Green, Florida Gulf Coast and Winston Salem State University.  WSSU and Bowling Green will open the tournament on the 28 at 1 p.m. and will be followed by UNCG and Florida Gulf Coast at 3 p.m.  WSSU and FGCU will get the festivities going on Saturday the 29 with their 1 p.m. matchup followed by UNCG and Bowling Green at 3:00 p.m.  2008 will mark the first year that UNCG has hosted the Marriott Classic and determined the pairings before tournament time.

"The Marriott Classic is a classic double header.  We will play at 3:00 both days against Florida Gulf Coast and Bowling Green," said Agee.  "It has historically been an outstanding weekend with good competition.  We are really looking forward to both homestands around thanksgiving weekend."

The Spartans will open December down I-40 at Elon on December 2 before returning home for three straight games with College of Charleston on the 6, Fordham on the 13 and Georgia Southern on the 17.  UNCG will then take off for the UC Irvine Tournament from December 21-22 before resuming play after the holiday at Samford on the 29 and Chattanooga on the 31.

The New Year begins on January 5th for the Spartans when they play host to Davidson.  Furman will then travel to Greensboro for a match-up on the 10th before UNCG heads back out on the road to Appalachian State and Western Carolina on January 12 and 17.  January continues with a home game against Wofford on Monday the 19th and two more road matches at Georgia Southern on Saturday the 24th and College of Charleston on Monday the 26th.  The Spartans will welcome Chattanooga on the 31st to close out January.

February begins with a home match against Samford on Monday the 2nd and a road game at Davidson on the 9th.  UNCG will then return home for a Saturday matchup with Western Carolina before traveling to Wofford and Furman on the 16 and 21.  Appalachian State and Elon will travel to Greensboro to help the Spartans close out the regular season on February 23rd and 28th.

The post season will begin for the Spartans on March 5 as the Southern Conference Tournament opens play in Chattanooga, TN.

"We are obviously excited about a new year," said Agee.  "We will have a lot of new faces mixed with young, returning players who gained a lot of experience last year.  The big difference is return of Kristen Boone, who is an outstanding point guard and raises our confidence level.  We are excited for the year, Kristen is excited for the year."

All home games for the Spartan women will be played at Fleming Gymnasium on the campus of UNCG.  Season tickets will go on sale Tuesday, September 2, while single game tickets will be available to the general public beginning October 1.  Prices for general admission season passes to all women's game are priced at $50.00 for adults and $30.00 for youth and seniors.
