CHARLOTTE, NC – UNC Greensboro was picked seventh in the Southern Conference during preseason coaches voting as was announced at the league's media day on Thursday.
UNCG's Kristen Boone was named to the Southern Conference's
preseason all-league team.
Chattanooga was picked first in the league, garnering eight of the
11 first-place votes. Western Carolina, picked second, grabbed the
other three first-place votes.
Davidson is third and Samford is fourth in the voiting, followed by Georgia Southern, College of Charleston, UNCG, Furman and Wofford. Appalachian State and Elon rounded out the poll.
The Spartans were also picked seventh in the media poll conducted as part of the day's festivities.
UNCG's Kristen Boone was among the 11 players selected to the preseason all-conference squad. Boone missed virtually the entire 2007-08 season after suffering a knee injury in the preseason. She played six minutes of one contest before deciding to have season-ending surgery. Boone had been tabbed the preseason Player of the Year in the league prior to last season. She is already the school's all-time leader steals and needs just 52 points for 1,000 in her career.
Davidson's Mercedes Robinson was tabbed the league's player of the year. Western Carolina and Wofford were the only two teams to put multiple players on the all-conference. The Catamounts' Brooke Johnson and Lauren Powell were on the squad, as well as the Terriers' Mahagony Williams and Liz Miller.
UNCG opens the season Nov. 14 at Virginia Tech. The Spartans will play an exhibition game against Guilford on Nov. 8.
