SPARTANBURG, SC – UNC Greensboro senior Gini Grimsley was named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for games Dec. 3-9, the SoCon office announced Wednesday.
An exercise and sports science major, Grimsley owns a 3.65 GPA. The Fairmont, NC, native scored a career-high 24 points in a 70-55 win over College of Charleston on Saturday, leading the Spartans to a 2-0 start in SoCon play.
Grimsley had a phenomenal shooting day against the Cougars, going 10-for-13 from the field (76.9 percent) and a perfect 4-for-4 from 3-point range. Her four 3s moved her into a tie for seventh on UNCG's all-time list in that category. She also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds on the day.
The win moved UNCG to 3-5 overall and 2-0 in the SoCon for the first time since the 2001-02 season, when the Spartans opened league play with three straight wins, over Appalachian State, Furman and Wofford.
Davidson women's basketball player Alex Thompson, Western Carolina men's basketball player Brigham Waginger, Samford women's basketball player Savannah Hill and Appalachian State track high jumper Rebecca Hazeltine were also nominated for the award.
Grimsley becomes the second UNCG student-athlete to take the honor this school year, as volleyball player Kaitlyn Nortz did so on Nov. 5.
UNCG's women's basketball team is back in action when it hosts Fordham on Saturday. Opening tip is set for 1 p.m. in Fleming Gym.
