Boone's No. 21 to be honored on Senior Day
GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro point guard Kristen Boone will have her number 21 honored prior to the Spartans' Senior Day game against Elon on Friday at Fleming Gym.
A banner bearing the fifth-year senior's name, number and years played (2004-09) will hang from the rafters in Fleming. UNCG Director of Athletics Nelson Bobb and UNCG coach Lynne Agee will make a special presentation to Boone during the Senior Day festivities.
Boone, a four-time Preseason All-Southern Conference selection, came into the season with 948 career points – just 52 shy of becoming the 22nd player in school history to score 1,000 points – but saw her season cut short by a torn ACL for the second year in a row. After playing just six minutes in 2007-08 because of a preseason injury, Boone came back for a fifth year and tore the same ACL three minutes into the Spartans' season opener at Virginia Tech on Nov. 14.
The Upper Marlboro, MD, native is the Spartans' career leader in steals with 315 and led the nation in that statistic as a freshman in 2004-05, when she was named the SoCon's Freshman of the Year.
The two-time All-SoCon First Team performer was also the league's Preseason Player of the Year in 2006-07. She appears in the top 10 in three other UNCG career lists in addition to steals, including assists, free throws made and free throws attempted.
The Spartans put together a 52-36 record in Boone's first three seasons before slumping to a 19-40 record without her in the lineup the last two seasons. UNCG is 12-16 overall and 9-10 in the SoCon this season.
Boone will be one of four seniors recognized on Senior Day along with Gini Grimsley, Ashley Ling and Ashley Mullins.
Boone will become the second UNCG women's basketball player to have her number honored, joining Rita Wiggs, whose No. 33 banner also hangs from the Fleming rafters. Wiggs played for the Spartans from 1971-74.
Tipoff against the Phoenix (3-25, 1-18 SoCon) is set for 7 p.m.
