Floyd's career-high 22 lead Spartans past Wofford

SPARTANBURG, SC – Sophomore Monique Floyd scored a career-high 22 points and UNC Greensboro used a 17-2 run to open the second half and erase a four-point halftime deficit as the Spartans earned a season sweep of Wofford on Monday, 74-62.

Amanda Leigh had 14 points and Gini Grimsley added 12 as the Spartans (10-16, 7-10 Southern Conference) picked up their 10th win of the season. Agne Girstautaite finished a point and a rebound shy of a double-double.

The Terriers (4-21, 2-15 SoCon) also put three players in double figures, with Mahagony Williams leading the way with 13 points. Natalie Gramblin added 12, while Liz Miller had 11. Williams also finished with nine rebounds and five blocked shots.

The Spartans trailed 30-26 at the half, but came out on fire after intermission, hitting six of their first nine shots to take a 43-32 lead. Five different players scored for UNCG in the run.

Wofford would regroup, cutting its deficit to five points twice in the second half, first on Maddie Helms' 3-pointer with 10:31 to play, and again on Summer Nichols' layup that made it 52-47 with 8:24 left.

Ashley Mullins answered with one of her two 3s on the night to get UNCG's lead back to eight before Williams' layup made it a six-point spread.

That was when the Spartans took over from the free throw line, as 15 of their final 19 points came from the stripe. UNCG, which entered the game shooting just 59.0 percent from the line on the year, was 17-for-22 in the second half and 18-for-24 for the game, good for 75 percent.

UNCG made just two field goals in the final seven minutes of the game, on Floyd layups with 4:46 and 27 seconds left.

After finding itself down 13 with just over three minutes to play, Wofford cut it to 10 on Miller's 3 with 2:12 left. UNCG pushed the lead back to 13 at the free throw line, but the Terriers again cut it to 10 at 67-57 on Kelly Dwyer's triple with 1:07 to go.

Floyd then scored six of the Spartans' last seven points to lock up the win.

Floyd finished 8-for-11 from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 from the line. She also matched her career high with six assists.

Wofford jumped out to a 7-0 lead, but Girstautaite hit back-to-back layups to ignite an 11-3 UNCG run to give the Spartans their first lead of the day. The Terriers would reclaim the lead, and Gramblin's jumper with 1:25 before the half gave Wofford its largest lead of the day at 30-21.

Floyd hit a jumper out of a UNCG timeout to get it to seven, and Grimsley's 3 with 23 seconds left got the Spartans back within four at the half.

The Spartans forced 30 Wofford turnovers in the game, a season high for a UNCG opponent.

The squads finished with 35 rebounds each, but UNCG limited Wofford to just eight in the second half.

UNCG returns to action Saturday at Furman for a 1:30 p.m. tip.
