UNCG falls to Wofford, 58-44 in SoCon opener

SPARTANBURG, SC – The UNC Greensboro women’s basketball team dropped their second consecutive game, falling to Wofford, 58-44 on Saturday evening in Benjamin Johnson Arena.

UNCG (1-8, 0-1 SoCon) was led by Brittany Frazier who tallied 10 points on 2-of-9 shooting from the field. The Powell, TN native recorded her third consecutive game in double figures while Ashley Ling and Kemena Brooks each tallied six rebounds in the loss.

“I continue to be disappointed with the way that we are playing,” said head coach Lynne Agee. “We are lacking consistent effort and intensity on both ends of the floor and in turn it's hurting us in every aspect of the game."

Wofford (4-4, 1-1 SoCon) was led by Liz Miller who tallied 12 points on 3-of-9 shooting from the field. Mahagony Williams recorded a game-high eight rebounds in the win. With the win, Terrier head coach Edgar Farmar picks up his first win over the Spartans.

The Terriers opened the second half with a 4-0 run but the Spartans were able to respond with free throws from Jasmine Dixon to cut the lead to 32-29 with 16:07. Both teams went cold from the floor after the opening minutes but a bucket from Ashley Mullins cut the lead to 35-32 with just under 13 minutes remaining. Wofford was able to responded and used five unanswered points to take a 40-32 lead, their largest of the game at the 11:13 mark.

UNCG couldn’t contain Wofford’s outside shooters who went 3-of-6 in the second half and forced 29 turnovers as the Spartans dropped their second consecutive game and drop their fourth consecutive SoCon opener.

In the first stanza both teams started the game slowly going a combined 1-of-6 through the games first four minutes, however the Spartans were able to regroup and used back-to-back buckets from Kemena Brooks; coupled with several free throws to pull ahead 12-3 at the 11:56 mark of the half.

Wofford finally broke their scoring drought with an 8-2 run to cut the lead to 16-11 with just under eight minutes remaining in the half. The Terriers were able to keep their offense going and used a 7-3 run to tie the game at 18-18 at the 5:18 mark of the half.

The Terriers took their first lead of the game at the 3:53 mark with a layup from Mahagony Williams and took a 25-22 lead into the break. UNCG shot 20.0 percent from the floor on 6-of-13 shooting for the half while Wofford shot 34.5 percent on 10-of-29 shooting.

The Spartans will head to the Sunshine State next when they travel to the Central Florida Holiday Classic Dec. 19-20. The Spartans face LaSalle on Wednesday Dec. 19 and host Central Florida on Dec. 20. The Spartans return to Fleming Gym on Dec. 28 when they host Chowan at 3 pm.
