Spartans fall to Charlotte, 70-45 in womens basketball action
GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro suffered a 70-45 setback to Charlotte in women’s basketball action at Fleming Gym on Wednesday night.
UNCG (0-6) was led by Gini Grimsley who tallied 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the floor while Ashley Ling recorded eight points which tied her career high. Monique Floyd also contributed a team-high five rebounds in the loss. The Spartans shot 36.5 percent from the field and tallied 34 rebounds.
Charlotte’s Sabrina Gregory and Erin Floyd were both in double-digits with 12 points each and Gregory tallied a game-high seven rebounds in the win.
“I was disappointed with the way we played in the second half”, head coach Lynne Agee said. “We couldn’t get any shots to fall but we also needed to have a better effort from everybody when they get on the floor. Tonight we had some people who weren’t quite with us.”
Both teams came out shooting in the second half but it was Charlotte that couldn’t miss and extended their lead to 45-30 at the 16:10 mark, their largest lead of the game at that point. Lakiah Hyson was able to cut into the lead with a long two from the right side but they couldn’t find a way to stop Charlotte from scoring as the 49ers extended their lead to 51-34 at the 12:54 mark.
Both teams went cold from the floor midway through the half but a bucket from Charlotte’s Wendy Stywalt ended the drought and put the 49ers ahead, 56-34. The Spartans had no answer for the 49ers in transition and committed 19 fouls while trying to slow the 49ers.
Charlotte used a 15-2 run to pull out to a commanding 22-point lead putting the game out of reach and giving Charlotte its third consecutive win.
Charlotte scored the first bucket of the game but the Spartans answer with a long two from Grimsley to tie the game early. UNCG was able to limit the touches of Charlotte’s Danielle Burgin and took a 4-3 lead early but the 49ers responded with two free throws to keep the game tied early.
The teams traded buckets through the early part of the half but a 4-0 run by Charlotte put them out in front 14-11 at the 11:59 mark of the half. The Spartans cut into the lead with a free throw from Grimsley but a 7-0 run put Charlotte ahead, 21-12 midway through the half.
Grimsley hit back-to-back buckets to cut the lead to 21-16 but an untimely UNCG foul on Jasmine Dixon put Charlotte on the line where they were able to capitalize and extended their lead to 25-18 with just over eight minutes remaining. With the 49ers leading 28-18, UNCG used a bucket from Ashley Ling and an offensive foul on the next possession to take away some of the momentum. Ling had the hot hand and with another bucket cut the lead to six points at the 5:18 mark while Kemena Brooks added a bucket to cut the lead to 28-24.
The Spartans held Charlotte without a field goal for 2:26 minutes before a bucket from Gregory pushed their lead to 32-24. Charlotte closed the half on a 6-2 run to take a 36-26 lead into the break.
UNCG shot 39.3 percent from the floor on 11-of-28 shooting and tallied 16 rebounds. Grimsley led the Spartans with 10 points while four players had two rebounds. Erin Floyd recorded 10 points to lead Charlotte in the first half.
The Spartans are next in action Dec.3 when they take on backyard rival, High Point in non-conference action. First tip is set for 7 pm at High Point’s Millis Center.
