UNCG fourth in coaches poll; Boone earns preseason honors
SPARTANBURG, SC – The Southern Conference
women’s basketball coaches picked UNC Greensboro to finish
fourth in the pre-season poll announced Tuesday afternoon. Senior
guard Kristen Boone was also named to the preseason all-conference
team.
Chattanooga was picked to win the conference after sharing the
regular season title and winning the league tournament last season.
The Lady Mocs collected seven first-place votes for 79 points
giving them the top spot in the poll. Western Carolina earned three
first-place votes for a 75 point total to finish in second
place.
Davidson earned the third place nod and UNCG, who finished with a
20-10, 13-5 SoCon record last year, took fourth place. Georgia
Southern and Appalachian State were predicted to finish in fifth
and sixth place, respectively while Wofford, Elon, Furman and
College of Charleston round out the poll.
Six schools were represented on the pre-season all-conference team,
which features preseason Player of the Year, Alex Anderson from
Chattanooga. Anderson earned Southern Conference Player of the Year
honors last season and was named Most Valuable Player of the
Southern Conference Championships.
Also making the preseason all-conference squad are
Chattanooga’s Laura Hall and Brooke Hand. Western Carolina,
who shared the regular season title with Chattanooga last season,
also placed three players on the team. Guards Monique Dawson and
Chevon Keith and center Brooke Johnson all earned pre-season
honors.
UNCG’s Boone, Georgia Southern’sTiffany Brown, Katie
Hamilton from Davidson and Whitney Tossie of Appalachian State were
also selected to the all-conference squad.
The UNCG women’s team will host an exhibition game on Friday
night against St. Paul’s at 7 pm in Fleming Gym. The Spartans
tip off the 2007-08 season Nov. 11, when they head to Raleigh, NC,
to take on North Carolina State.
