UNCG's Agee to be inducted into Guilford County Hall of Fame

GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro women’s basketball coach Lynne Agee was among nine inductees announced Wednesday when the Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame’s 2008 induction class was announced during a press conference at NewBridge Bank Park.

Along with Agee, the fourth induction class will include former Kansas and NBA star Danny Manning, who played his high school basketball at Page HS, Dr. Herb T. Appenzeller, former Director of Athletics at Guilford College; former NFL linemen Jeff and Joe Bostic; Dick Kemp, a High Point HS football star who went onto a successful college and professional coaching career; Bodie McDowell, a former outdoors editor at the Greensboro News & Record; Ken Rush, a NASCAR superstar in the 1950s and 1960s; and Floyd “Pep” Young, one of the top second basemen in professional baseball in the 1930s.

“The honor came as a great surprise to me,” said Agee. “When you are placed in a group with individuals that includes Marge Burns, Maxine Allen, my longtime friend Kay Yow, Bob McAdoo, Curly Neal and so many talented others – that is just overwhelming. I am truly touched by the committee’s invitation to include me with such greats.”

Agee has served as UNCG’s women’s basketball coach for the last 27 seasons, amassing 520 wins as the coach of the Spartans – a total that accounts for 82 percent of the program’s total victories. In 30 years as a head coach, she has a career record of 566-280 – winning more than two-thirds of her games. An inductee into UNCG’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004 as the first active coach to be enshrined, her UNCG teams have won 20 or more games 15 times and have won 13 conference titles. In the first seven seasons of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament (1982-88), Agee and the Spartans were one of just 10 teams to advance to the tourney each of those seven (all divisions). She led her very first UNCG team to the national championship game of the NCAA Division III tournament, finishing with a 25-3 mark.

She has also served previously as an assistant athletic director and associate athletic director at UNCG before stepping away from administration in 1999 to focus solely on coaching. Agee, a native of Roanoake, VA and graduate of Longwood College, also served as women’s tennis coach during the university’s Division III era. She led that team to a national runner-up finish, as well, in 1983.

A total of 35 individuals have been enshrined in the three previous inductions classes. That number will grow to 44 on the night of September 22 when the 2008 class is enshrined during ceremonies at the Greensboro Coliseum. It is the second straight year an active UNCG coach will be included in the inductees. Last year, UNCG men’s soccer coach Michael Parker was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
