DAVIDSON, NC – The UNC Greensboro women’s basketball team couldn’t find a way to stop Davidson’s shooters and dropped a 76-50 contest in Belk Arena on Friday night.
UNCG (5-20, 3-11 SoCon) was led by Brittany Frazier and Kemena Brooks who were both in double figures. Brooks led the way with 11 points on 1-of-5 shooting while going 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Frazier added 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field and Jasmine Dixon tallied a game-high 12 rebounds in the loss.
“We were not mentally prepared to play tonight,” said head coach Lynne Agee. “We weren’t physically or mentally involved in the game.”
Davidson (15-9, 9-4 SoCon) was led by Mercedes Robinson who tallied a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Danielle Hemerka and Kelly Gassie were also in double figures with 12 and 14 points, respectively.
The Spartans shot 31.4 percent for the game on 16-of-51 shooting and were 14-of-18 from the free throw line. UNCG also tallied 37 rebounds in the loss.
UNCG ended its nearly 10 minute field goal drought with a bucket from Brittany Frazier to open the half and despite trading buckets with the ‘Cats, Davidson kept the lead at 10 points early in the second stanza.
With Davidson leading 47-39, UNCG ended a three minute field goal drought with a three-pointer from Kendra Smith which cut the Wildcat lead to eight points but Davidson was able to kill UNCG’s momentum with a three-pointer from Kelly Gassie followed by a long two from Mercedes Robinson to give the Wildcats their largest lead of the game, 54-41, with just under nine minutes left to play.
Grimsley and Frazier continued to be UNCG’s scoring options late in the half as UNCG tallied five unanswered buckets to cut the lead to 62-46 but they couldn’t figure out a way to stop Davidson’s outside shooters as the Wildcats went on an 11-2 run to close the game and took the 76-50 win.
The Wildcats shot 45.0 percent on 27-of-60 shooting and tallied 39 rebounds in the win.
Both squads started the game slowly with Davidson opening the game 0-for-3 from the floor but a bucket from Mercedes Robinson gave the Wildcats a, 3-0 lead after she completed the three-point play. UNCG was plagued by turnovers in the opening minutes, turning the ball over four times through the games first four minutes of action.
Brittany Frazier got the Spartans on the board at the 15:58 mark with a long jumper and from that point the teams traded buckets Brittany Frazier was able to tie the game with two buckets but two quick buckets in the paint gave the Wildcats a 13-9 lead. UNCG went on a 4-0 run sparked by Gini Grimsley to keep the game tied at 15-15.
Davidson took a 25-17 lead sparked by a 6-0 run late in the half and held the Spartans without a field goal for the final 9:44 of the half but the Spartans used a 8-0 run from the free throw line to get the lead as close as 27-23 but Davidson closed the half with four straight buckets to take a 31-23 lead into the intermission. UNCG held a 20-16 rebounding edge and was led by Kemena Brooks who was 4-for-4 from the line and had seven points.
The Spartans continue their road swing with a game at Appalachian State on Tuesday night. First tip is set for 7 pm from Appalachian State’s Holmes Center.
