CHATTANOOGA, TN – Chattanooga’s Alex Anderson was perfect from the floor to lead Chattanooga to a 77-50 win over the UNC Greensboro women’s basketball team in Southern Conference action on Monday night.
UNCG (3-14, 1-5 SoCon) was led by junior Gini Grimsley who had 14 points on 3-of-7 shooting, including going 2-of-3 from behind the arc. Lakiah Hyson was UNCG’s next leading scorer and tied a career high with nine points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field. The Spartans had four players with four rebounds to lead them on the defensive end.
“We came across a tough Chattanooga team tonight,” said head coach Lynne Agee. “We knew that this team and this game were going to be tough and the game lived up to that. We used a lot of our young people tonight and I was pleased with some of the stuff that I saw, we are still developing and it’s going to take some time. We have to take it one game at a time.”
Chattanooga (14-3, 6-0 SoCon) was led by Alex Anderson who was 5-of-5 from the field for 15 points and three rebounds. Brooke Hand was also in double figures with 11 points on 4-of-12 shooting. Kristen Spann tallied a game-high seven rebounds in the win.
UNCG shot 30.9 percent for the game on 17-of-55 shooting from the field while Chattanooga shot 43.1 percent on 25-of-58 shooting from the field. The Spartans bench outscored the Lady Mocs, 33-29 while Chattanooga held a slim 40-35 rebounding advantage.
The second half opened sloppy for both teams but UNCG scored the first six points of the half while only allowing Chattanooga two points. Chattanooga would regroup and used eight points from Alex Anderson to extend their lead to 60-31 at the 11:53 mark of the second half.
UNCG went with an all-freshman lineup midway through the half and was able to get several points from TaShama Banner, Kendra Smith and Sharniece Wadelington but a 7-2 run by Chattanooga sealed the game as the lead wouldn’t get below 30 points for the remainder of the game.
Chattanooga opened the game on a 15-4 run sparked by three three-pointers in the first four minutes. Kemena Brooks was able to provide UNCG with a little offense and scored four of UNCG’s first seven points of the game. The Spartans kept shooting but just couldn’t find the basket but with about six minutes remaining in the half reserves Gini Grimsley and Wadelington provided a spark with Grimsley hitting a three-pointer and Wadelington making some key drives to the basket resulting in foul shots.
UNCG used several buckets from Lakiah Hyson in the final minutes of the half but the Spartans couldn’t contain the Lady Mocs from the perimeter as Chattanooga went into the break ahead, 49-22. The Lady Mocs hit six three-point field goals in the first half, including three from Brooke Hand and shot 53.1 percent from the field on 17-of-32 shooting.
The Spartans return home for a Friday night matchup against Davidson. First tip is set for 7 pm in Fleming Gym.
