SPARTANBURG, SC – UNC Greensboro senior guard Jasmine Byrd has been named the Southern Conference women’s basketball Player of the Week for her role in the Spartans’ two non-conference victories this past weekend.
Byrd, a native of Dumfries, VA, was awarded the UNCG Thanksgiving Tournament MVP honors after recording two 20-point games and helping the Spartans win their own tournament. She finished the weekend averaging 22.5 points per game and a .536 field goal percentage.
In UNCG’s 81-50 win over Longwood on Friday, Byrd tallied 22 points and went 8-11 from the field, including 4-6 from beyond the arc. The Spartans defeated the Big East’s Providence in the tournament’s championship game, 72-68, on Saturday. Byrd finished with 23 points and went 6-12 from three-point range.
The Spartans are now 4-1 on the early season and in the four victories, Byrd has topped the 20-point mark. She also leads the SoCon in scoring average with 20.4 points per game.
UNCG travels to North Carolina on Thursday to take on the nationally-ranked Tar Heels. Game time set for 7 pm.
