GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro women’s basketball coach Lynne Agee announced Monday that former Spartan point guard Amanda Eaton has been hired as an assistant coach for the 2006-07 academic year.
Eaton was a four-year starter in the backcourt for Agee from 2001-05. The Wheeling, WV native scored 948 points in her career and made a program-best 169 three-point field goals. She also ranks second in free throw shooting with a .806 (175-for-217) career shooting percentage.
“We are thrilled to have Amanda back in our program,” said Agee. “She was one of the most dedicated players I have ever seen and we expect her to be the same way as a coach. The first hand knowledge she has playing along side many of our current players and against current players in the conference will be a great asset to the coaching staff.”
After graduation from UNCG, Eaton remained in the area and began her coaching career last season heading up the Junior Varsity girl’s program at Northwest Guilford High School in Greensboro. She led the Vikings to a first place finish in the Metro 4A Conference with a 21-4 record.
With her experience as a guard, Eaton will work along side associate coach Carol Peschel with the UNCG backcourt players. Eaton will also be in charge of the tape exchange program, while assisting in all other facets of the program.
“I am really excited to get my collegiate coaching career under way,” said Eaton. “I think it’s going to be a smooth transition because of my familiarity with the program and there is a comfort zone already in place with many of the players on the team.”
Last month, Jon Hines was elevated as the second assistant on Agee’s staff replacing Vickie Henson, who decided to leave coaching after four years at UNCG and 12 years overall in the coaching ranks.
UNCG expects its top-nine scorers and 11 players back from last season’s squad that posted an 18-12 record and a second place finish in the Southern Conference regular season standings with a 12-6 league slate. The Spartans made it all the way to the SoCon Tournament title game.
