Two UNCG teams honored for perfect APR scores

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – UNC Greensboro had two teams - women’s tennis and women’s basketball - among the 839 in Division I that received public recognition by the NCAA when the latest Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores were released on Wednesday.

UNCG was one of 217 Division I institutions represented on the list, making up more than two-thirds of the 326 schools with Division I membership. These teams posted multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The public recognition awards are part of the broad Division I academic reform effort.

“These teams prove once again that student-athletes are students first, and many of them are excellent students,” NCAA President Miles Brand said. “I want to personally congratulate these teams and their student-athletes who are working hard in their sport and in the classroom and setting a great example for all students.”

Of the teams receiving awards for their latest academic performance are 366 men’s and mixed teams and 473 women’s teams. The men’s sports with the highest number of teams garnering public recognition are golf (51), cross country (49) and tennis (40). The women’s sports with the highest number of teams receiving awards are tennis (64), volleyball (54) and golf (52).

Both of the UNCG teams that were honored had perfect 1000 scores on the APR that was released on Wednesday. UNCG was one of 147 schools that had more than one team recognized.

 “I think it is in part the due-diligence of the coaches of those programs,” said UNCG Director of Athletics Nelson E. Bobb. “But it is also to the credit of the student-athletes who have stayed the course, graduating from our university. The women's basketball and women's tennis programs at UNCG should be commended for a job well-done.”

Seven Southern Conference schools were among the 217 that had programs honored. In all, there are 6,110 Division I sports teams.
