GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro will retire the No. 42 from its women’s basketball program on Saturday afternoon, paying tribute to former Spartan standout Melinda Goodson. The ceremony will take place before UNCG’s 2 pm tip against Appalachian State.
Goodson, who played at UNCG from 1996-2000, was a two-time all-conference performer with the Spartans. Despite missing the last 20 games of her senior season due to injury, she still scored 1,464 points in her career – still ranking second all-time at UNCG and the most in the school’s Division I era. Had she not suffered a season-ending injury, she likely would have scored the additional 122 points she needed to break the school’s career scoring record.
A Street and Smith’s All-American Honorable Mention selection in 1998-99, she led the Spartans to two Southern Conference regular season titles, and a Southern Conference Tournament title and an NCAA Tournament bid in 1998. During Goodson’s four seasons at UNCG, the Spartans amassed a record of 86-28. In those 94 career games, she averaged 15.6 points per game – third all-time at UNCG.
Goodson will become the fourth basketball player – male or female – in school history to have their number retired. She joins former women’s basketball star Angie Polk and former men’s basketball standouts Scott Hartzell and Courtney Eldridge, whose numbers hang in the rafters at Fleming Gymnasium.
