GREENSBORO, N.C. – Coming off a 2-1 start in Southern Conference play, the UNCG softball team will host Charlotte for a doubleheader Thursday, March 14 at 2 p.m. at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
The Spartans (17-3) snapped their seven-game winning streak last Sunday dropping a 5-0 game against Samford in the series finale. The 49ers enter the contest with an 11-7 record and will face Campbell for a doubleheader Wednesday, March 13.
Freshman Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) went 4-for-8 with two home runs, a double and two RBI in the series against the Bulldogs. Thomas leads the team with nine home runs, which is tied for 12th in the nation.
The Blue and Gold have three hitters hitting over .350 in Thomas, senior Eileen Horsmon (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) and junior Katelyn Bedwell (Surrey, B.C./Elgin Park). Thomas paces the team with a .403 average on 25 hits. Horsmon sits in second batting .361 on 22 hits, nine doubles and nine RBI. Horsmon is 13th in the nation in doubles per game (0.45). Bedwell comes in third at .356 with three doubles, four home runs, 18 RBI and seven runs scored.
The pitching staff holds a 1.67 ERA, which is 23rd in the nation out of 292 teams, is led by redshirt junior Raeanne Hanks (Rainier, Ore./Rainier Senior) who holds a 9-1 record with a 1.26 ERA and a career-high 71 strikeouts. Hanks has also earned three saves, which sits in a tie for first in the nation. Freshman Nicole Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) has been stellar in relief holding a 3-0 record with 1.24 ERA and 19 strikeouts. Classmate Kelly Lupton (Galloway, N.J./Absegami) also is 3-1 in seven appearances with a save and 35 strikeouts.
Charlotte is coming off a doubleheader sweep against Gardner Webb (W, 7-3, W, 10-2) last weekend. The 49ers are led by two .400 hitters in Briana Gwaltney (.441) and Chelsea Ingersoll (.434). Gwaltney has 26 hits, three doubles, two home runs and a team-leading 21 RBI, while Ingersoll has 23 hits, four doubles, four home runs and 11 RBI. In the circle, Chelsea Lisikatos is 4-0 with a 2.18 ERA in 10 appearances. The 49ers swept the season series last year in Charlotte and hold a 38-27 overall record against the Spartans.
