Softball Drops Series Finale Against Samford, 5-0

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG softball team dropped the series finale against Samford, 5-0, Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
The Spartans fall to 17-3, 2-1 in the SoCon with the loss, while Samford improves to 8-10, 1-2 in the SoCon. It marks the first loss by more than a run for UNCG.
Sophomore Mollie Hanson needed just 97 pitches to throw a no-hitter against UNCG. Hanson allowed just two walks with eight strikeouts to pick up her sixth win of the season. Freshman Kelly Lupton (Galloway, N.J./Absegami) earned her first loss of the season, allowing two earned runs in 3 1/3 innings.
The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second after Casey Clark lined a two-run home run to centerfield with two outs.
Samford added to the lead in the top of the fifth when Alex Adams (2-for-2) singled up the middle to score Callie Brister from second.
The Bulldogs picked up another home run to pad their lead to 4-0 after Brister hit a home run to left centerfield in the top of the seventh. Kayla Shaffer singled to right field after an intentional walk to plate another run for Samford.
The Spartans had a chance in the seventh but a fly out, pop up to shortstop and a swinging strikeout ended the opportunity. Junior Aisha Figueroa (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) and freshman Danielle Vega (Rialto, Calif./Aquinas) each had a walk in the contest.
UNCG will return to action Thursday, March 14 with a doubleheader against Charlotte at 2 p.m. at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
