Softball Opens SoCon Play Against Samford

GREENSBORO, N.C. – After starting the season with its best record ever at 15-2, the UNCG softball team will begin Southern Conference action with a three-game set against Samford from March 9-10 at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
The Spartans will start with a doubleheader against the Bulldogs Saturday, March 9 at 1 p.m. and finish the series with a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
UNCG is riding a five-game winning streak after a doubleheader sweep last weekend at home against Monmouth (W, 5-2) and a comeback victory versus Virginia, 2-1. Freshman Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) had a home run in both games, including a clutch solo shot to break up a perfect game against Virginia in game two.
At the plate, the Blue and Gold have three hitters hitting over .385 in senior Eileen Horsmon (Dunkirk, Md./Northern), Thomas and junior Katelyn Bedwell (Surrey, B.C./Elgin Park). Horsmon leads the team with a .392 average on 20 hits, nine doubles and eight RBI. Thomas paces the team with seven home runs, a .870 slugging percentage, 17 RBI and second in average at .389. Bedwell comes in third at .388 with three doubles, three home runs, 15 RBI and six runs scored.
The pitching staff is led by redshirt junior Raeanne Hanks (Rainier, Ore./Rainier Senior) who holds a 7-1 record with a 1.35 ERA and a career-high 64 strikeouts. Freshman Nicole Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) has been stellar in relief holding a 3-0 record with a tiny 0.97 ERA and 16 strikeouts. Classmate Kelly Lupton (Galloway, N.J./Absegami) also is 3-0 in six appearances with a save and 32 strikeouts.
Samford is 7-8 entering conference play after a 1-1 weekend against Nicholls (W, 9-1 in six innings) and a loss against South Alabama, 4-0. The Bulldogs are led by Callie Brister who holds a .342 average on 13 hits, four doubles, a home run and 5 RBI. In the circle, Mollie Hanson is 5-7 in 13 appearances, including nine complete games and 86 strikeouts in 69 innings of work. The Spartans lead the all-time series with a 10-4 record, including taking two of three last season in Birmingham, Ala.
