Tournament Notes
GREENSBORO, N.C. – After winning its first home tournament last weekend, the UNCG softball team heads to Rock Hill, S.C. to face Dayton, Hartford, Rhode Island, Virginia and Monmouth in the Combat Invitational hosted by Winthrop from Friday, March 1 through Sunday, March 3.
UNCG (11-2) will play five games in total with two contests Friday, March 1 against Dayton and Hartford at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., respectively. The Spartans will play another doubleheader Saturday against Rhode Island (3 p.m.) and Virginia (5 p.m.). The Blue and Gold will conclude the tournament with a matchup against Monmouth Sunday at 10 a.m.
The Spartans opened the home slate with two wins against Quinnipiac (W, 10-8, W, 9-1 in five innings) and a 7-2 victory against C-USA member Marshall. UNCG lost a tough 4-3 game in the rematch against the Thundering Herd ending the Spartans seven-game winning streak. The Blue and Gold bounced back by defeating Drexel, 9-4, in extra innings to win the Spartan Classic with a 4-1 record.
Freshman Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Ca./Northwood) and junior Katelyn Bedwell (Surrey, B.C./Elgin Park) lead the Spartans in hitting with identical .400 averages. Thomas leads the team with four home runs while second in RBI (10) and doubles (5). Bedwell has three home runs with a team-leading 14 RBI with one triple.
Senior Eileen Horsmon (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) is hitting .375 (15-for-40) with six doubles, four RBI and seven runs scored. Freshman Danielle Vega (Rialto, Calif./Aquinas) is fourth on the team with a .356 average on 16 hits, six doubles, one home run and seven RBI.
In the circle, redshirt junior Raeanne Hanks (Rainier, Ore./Rainier Senior) leads the team with a 6-1 record that includes four complete games, two saves and a team-high 60 strikeouts. Freshman Nicole Thomas (Irvine, Ca./Northwood) had a great tournament to improve to 2-0 on the season and leads the team with a 0.93 ERA. Sophomore Erica Navarette (San Marcos, Calif./Mission Hills) earned her first win of the season in a run-rule victory against Quinnipiac.
Dayton enters the tournament with a 2-8 record with wins against South Dakota State, 2-1, and Pittsburgh, 7-2, last weekend in Bowling Green, K.Y. The Flyers are led by Kathleen Maloof who has a .387 average on 12 hits, two doubles, three home runs and eight RBI. In the circle, Kayla English holds a 2-4 record with three complete games and 37 strikeouts in 37.1 innings.
