Robb named SoCon Softball Player of the Week
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG junior Heather Robb has been named the Southern Conference Softball Player of the Week for games April 23-29, the league office announced Monday.
A shortstop from Apex, N.C., Robb hit a staggering .750 on the week, going 6-for-8 with a double and two home runs. She slugged an impressive 1.625 and turned in a .778 on-base percentage as UNCG swept a three-game series from Western Carolina. She walked once, scored five runs and had three RBI.
Robb was 3-for-3 with a homer and three runs scored in UNCG's 8-7 win over the Catamounts in game one on Saturday. Her home run, a no-doubter to left center, tied the contest at 5 after UNCG had trailed 5-1 earlier in the contest. She followed that up by going 1-for-2 with another homer and a walk in UNCG's 6-5 game-two win. Her two-run shot was part of a three-run sixth that saw UNCG tie the contest at 5 after trailing 5-2. The two-homer day was the first of her career.
Robb had another multi-hit game Sunday, smoking a double down the left field line in the second inning and singling and scoring what would prove to be the winning run in the fourth as UNCG completed the sweep with a 4-2 win.
With a career-high eight home runs this season, Robb moved into sole possession of ninth on UNCG's career list with her 16th and 17th this weekend.
The player of the week award is UNCG's first this season and the first of Robb's career.
It was quite an eventful weekend for the Spartans, who took both of Saturday's contests in walk-off fashion and turned a triple play in game two. UNCG won Sunday to complete its first three-game sweep of the season, evening its league record at 10-10 to jump from sixth to fourth in the SoCon standings.
UNCG also dedicated a memorial garden Saturday in honor of former player and coach Tara Csernecky, who died of a heart attack in December at the age of 40.
The Spartans wrap up the regular season with a three-game set against Chattanooga at the UNCG Softball Stadium this weekend. Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's single contest are both slated to start at 1 p.m. UNCG will honor senior players Alex Emeterio and Cory Mattson and manager Katelyn Dodson prior to Sunday's contest.
