WOODSTOCK, Ga. – UNCG pounded out 10 hits and took advantage of four errors to pick up a 9-3 win over Morehead State at the Buzz Classic on Saturday.
The Spartans (4-10) jumped all over the Eagles (4-7), scoring in each of the first five innings.
Morehead State took a 1-0 lead on Stephanie Etter's RBI single in the first inning, but UNCG answered with a pair in the bottom half. Aisha Figueroa led off with a single and moved to third on an error in the outfield, and Aubrey Baldwin knocked her in with a sacrifice fly to tie the contest. One out later, Eileen Horsmon and Katelyn Bedwell hit back-to-back doubles to put UNCG on top for for.
The Spartans added a run on the second on Figueroa's RBI single and made it 4-1 on Heather Robb's RBI single in the third inning.
MSU got a run back on Samm Sparks' bases-loaded sac fly in the fourth, but UNCG answered with two in the bottom half on Baldwin's RBI single and a Horsmon sac fly.
The Spartans put the game out of reach in the fifth, scoring three runs on a wild play. With the bases loaded, Figueroa reached on a fielder's choice that knocked in Robb, but an error on the play allowed Toni MacReynolds and Tatiana Alcala to score, as well.
Morehead State scored its final run on Sparks' RBI single in the sixth but would get no closer.
UNCG starter Cory Mattson evened her record at 3-3, allowing three runs on 12 hits and three walks in the complete-game effort. She struck out four.
The Eagles sent four pitchers into the circle, with starter Jami Whitcomb absorbing the loss to fall to 3-3. She was tagged for three runs on five hits in two innings of work.
Figueroa and Horsmon had two hits each to pace UNCG at the dish, while six other Spartans recorded hits. Figueroa and Baldwin had two RBI each.
Amber Riddle, Adrena Anderson, Elizabeth Wagner and Kayla Brill had two hits each for Morehead State.
The Sunday schedule for the Buzz Classic has been rearranged to make up some of the games lost due to rain Saturday. The Spartans will pick up a game at Kennesaw State at 10 a.m., while their contest against Winthrop, originally slated for 10, will now be played at 2 p.m. at the Twin Creeks Softball Complex in Woodstock. UNCG's contest against Tennessee Tech that was scheduled for Saturday will not be made up.
