STATESBORO, Ga. – UNCG junior pitcher Cory Mattson has earned a spot on the Southern Conference Softball Championship All-Tournament Team, as announced at the conclusion of the tournament on Saturday.
Mattson started all four games for the Spartans, picking up decisions in each game as UNCG went 2-2 at the tournament. The Everett, Wash., native posted a 1.20 ERA for the tournament, striking out 11 batters in 23 1/3 innings. Opponents hit just .239 against her as she allowed just four earned runs against No. 1 seed and eventual champion Chattanooga, No. 3 seed Georgia Southern, No. 4 seed College of Charleston and No. 7 seed Samford.
She threw a three-hit shutout over Georgia Southern on Wednesday as the Spartans topped the Eagles 2-0 to open tournament play. She allowed one earned run each in starts against Samford and Chattanooga and just two against CofC.
Sara Poteat of the champion Lady Mocs was the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Chattanooga had five players on the all-tournament team, College of Charleston had three and UNCG and Appalachian State had one each.
