Storylines
• UNCG will take on its second Atlantic Coast Conference team in the last week when it heads to Virginia Tech for a doubleheader Tuesday. Game one is set for 5 p.m. at the Tech Softball Park.
• The Hokies are the third of four ACC teams on the slate for UNCG this season. The Spartans opened the year at Florida State, then took on NC State last Wednesday. UNCG also has a doubleheader scheduled at North Carolina on April 13. So far this year, UNCG is 1-3 against ACC teams, going 1-1 against Florida State and 0-2 at NC State. Junior pitcher Cory Mattson no-hit then-No. 23 Florida State 1-0 in 9 innings in the first game of the season.
• Sophomore Eileen Horsmon is hitting .417 against ACC competition this season, going 1-for-3 with the lone run in the season-opening win over FSU, followed by a 2-for-3 effort against the Seminoles the following day. She also had a 2-for-4 showing against NC State in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader.
• The Spartans took two of three from Furman last weekend to win their second straight Southern Conference series. UNCG grabbed a 7-3 win in the opener, while Furman evened the series with an 8-4 win in game two. The Spartans won Sunday's rubber game, 4-2. Horsmon hit .625 for the weekend with two home runs – both coming Saturday – and five RBI. She slugged 1.375 against the Paladins and raised her average to .309 on the season with the big weekend. Mattson was 2-0 with a 2.06 ERA against the Paladins, appearing in all three games.
• Alex Emeterio, who went 3-for-3 with two doubles Sunday, is leading the team with a .386 batting average and six doubles and has reached base in 24 straight contests. Kaitlin Merkt is hitting .354 with five homers and 22 RBI, both team bests. Jordan Jewett is hitting .311 and shares the team lead with six doubles, while Horsmon checks in at .309 and freshman catcher Katelyn Bedwell is hitting an even .300.
• Since getting a hit in just one of UNCG's first five games, Emeterio has recorded at least one hit in 20 of the 23 games since. Overall, she has hit safely in 21 of UNCG's 28 games.
• In the circle, Mattson is 7-9 with a 4.16 ERA and has won three of her last four decisions. Freshman Josie Felix is 4-5 with a 4.03 ERA, while sophomore Raeanne Hanks is 2-1 with a 7.47 ERA. Emeterio has made six appearances but has yet to register a decision. She has a 9.33 ERA but is allowing opposing batters to hit just .263, the best mark on the staff.
• Virginia Tech leads the all-time series, 13-4. UNCG's last win came in 2009, when the teams split a doubleheader in Greensboro. The Hokies took an 8-2 win in 10 innings last season at the Jacksonville University Tournament. Katie Stripling hit a two-out pinch-hit home run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 1 and send it to extras, but after the teams traded runs in the eighth, the Hokies plated six in the top of the 10th for the win.
• The Hokies are off to a 24-8 start to the season, including a 4-2 mark in the ACC. Virginia Tech has won six straight since dropping both ends of a doubleheader at North Carolina on March 19. After taking the third game against the Tar Heels, VT swept a doubleheader from Cornell and a three-game set from Boston College.
• Virginia Tech did not play at home this season until taking on Cornell at the Tech Softball Park on Wednesday, but is now 5-0 there after the weekend sweep of the Eagles.
• The Hokies played some wild games with BC, winning the first 9-1 in 6 innings on Saturday before hanging on for an 11-10 win in game two. VT grabbed a 4-2 win Sunday to complete the sweep. Jasmin Harrell picked up all three wins in the circle, two of them coming in relief.
• Dani Anderson leads the Hokies with a .388 average, while Courtney Liddle is hitting .368. Betty Rose checks in at .333 and Kristen Froehlich is batting .303. Anderson and Froehlich share the team lead with 28 RBI, while Rose has a team-best seven homers. Kat Banks is hitting .295 and is 17-for-19 in stolen base attempts.
• Harrell is 12-2 on the season with a 2.46 ERA, while Kenzie Roark is 10-5 with a 3.27 mark. Harrell has 92 strikeouts against just 32 walks, while Roark has 87 strikeouts and has walked 46 batters. Opposing batters are hitting just .203 against Harrell, but she has given up 13 home runs in 21 appearances.
