GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG's softball team was recently named one of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's girls got game All-Academic Teams for 2009-10, while five student-athletes were named Scholar Athletes.
Coach Jennifer Herzig's Spartans tied for 101st nationally among Division I programs with a 3.110 grade point average for the 2009-10 academic year. UNCG was one of just five Southern Conference teams to make the list, with only Georgia Southern (92nd) ahead of the Spartans. Western Carolina (109), Elon (116) and College of Charleston (121) were the other league schools to earn All-Academic honors.
UNCG's Emily Akiyama and Laura Olenderski, seniors on the 2010 squad, were named NFCA Scholar Athletes for the fourth time each. Kayla Hensley earned the distinction for the third time in her career, while Kaitlin Merkt and Heather Robb took the honor for the first time each.
In addition to excelling in the classroom, the Spartans also had a successful 2010 season on the field. UNCG posted its first winning season in Southern Conference play since 2003 and advanced to the SoCon tournament title game for the first time in school history.
