Bedwell, Canada qualify for World Championship

BOGOTA, Colombia - Incoming UNCG freshman Katelyn Bedwell and the Canadian Junior Women's National Team locked up a spot in the 2011 ISF Junior Women's World Championship by taking a pair of wins at the III Pan American Championship on Friday.

Canada downed Venezuela 6-0 early Friday, then topped the Dominican Republic later in the day, 2-0, to earn its spot in the World Championship in Cape Town, South Africa, in December 2011.

The sweep assured Canada of a top-five finish in the Pan American Championship, securing a spot in the World Championship. Canada will face Brazil on Saturday, with the winner of that game guaranteed of a medal at the Pan American Championship.

Brazil downed Canada by a 3-1 score on Aug. 7, the first day of the tournament, but Canada demolished Brazil, 17-0, in an exhibition contest in the days leading up to the tournament.

Canada had 12 hits in the romp over Venezuela, putting three runs on the board in the first inning. Canada scored again in the second, then salted the win away with a pair of runs in the fifth.

Against the Dominican Republic, Canada again drew first blood in the first, then gave itself some breathing room with an insurance run in the sixth.

Canada now sports a 6-2 record at the tournament, with its only losses coming to Brazil and the United States.
