Bedwell, Canada fall in Pan American opener

BOGOTA, Colombia - Incoming UNCG freshman Katelyn Bedwell and the Canadian Junior Women's National Team lost their opener at the III Pan American Championship, falling to Brazil, 3-1 on Saturday.

Canada outhit Brazil 9-3 on the day but left nine runners on base. Canada had beaten Brazil 17-0 in an exhibition earlier in the week.

This time, Brazil took advantage of a hit and three Canada errors to break up a scoreless game with three unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth. Canada got a run back in the sixth, but could not complete the comeback.

Bedwell played well in Canada's three exhibition games leading into the tournament, starting with a three-hit, two-RBI game in an 11-6 win over host Colombia. She followed that with a solo home run in Canada's 8-2 loss to the United States, then had a single in the 17-0 win over Brazil.

Canada returns to action Sunday, when it will take on Argentina.
