Mattson named SoCon Pitcher of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - UNC Greensboro sophomore Cory Mattson has been named the Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week for games March 1-7, the league office announced Wednesday.

Mattson won all three of UNCG's games at the Buzz Classic on the week, going 3-0 with a 0.70 ERA and earning a spot on the Buzz Classic All-Tournament Team.

In addition to turning in the first three-game winning streak of her career, she also evened her record at 4-4 on the season and reached a career high in wins after going 3-7 as a freshman last season.

Mattson's first win came on Friday against Howard, when she tossed a three-hit shutout. Mattson, working with very little margin for error in the 1-0 win, allowed just two walks and struck out four in the game.

The following day, the Everett, Wash., native allowed just one run on three hits and four walks in a 4-1 win over Bowling Green, striking out six in 6 innings of work.

She capped her week with a 4-1 win over Tennessee Tech, allowing just four hits and five walks and matching her career high with 10 strikeouts in the win.

The award is the first of Mattson's career. She is the first UNCG pitcher to take the honor since Amber Harrell on May 4, 2009.

Samford's Katie England was named the SoCon Player of the Week.

UNCG, which went 3-2 at the Buzz Classic to up its season record to 7-11, will open Southern Conference play this weekend when it hosts Georgia Southern for a three-game set. The squads will play a doubleheader Saturday and a single game Sunday, both with 1 p.m. starts.
