SPARTANBURG, SC – UNC Greensboro pitcher Amber Harrell has been named the Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week for games played Feb. 9-15, the league office announced Monday.
Appalachian State third baseman Katie Boyd was named the SoCon Player of the Week.
Harrell, a junior from McDonough, GA, went 2-0 with a 0.54 ERA in two games at the Green and White Classic over the weekend. She struck out 14 and allowed just one earned run on five hits and four walks as opponents hit just .111 against her for the tournament.
Harrell's dominant weekend began with an extra-inning win over tournament host Charlotte on Friday. She pitched eight strong innings, allowing just two runs – one earned – on three hits and three walks in UNCG's 3-2 win. She struck out seven.
Harrell was even better the following day against Army, allowing just two unearned runs on two hits and a walk in five innings of work as UNCG mercy-ruled the Black Knights, 10-2. She again struck out seven.
The Pitcher of the Week award is the first of Harrell's career. She was named the SoCon Pitcher of the Month for February of last season. Harrell is UNCG's first Pitcher of the Week since May 5, 2008, when Hannah Angel took the honor.
The Spartans (6-4) went 4-1 at the Green and White Classic, reaching the tournament's championship game. UNCG is back in action this coming weekend at the Sixth Annual Georgia Softball Classic. The Spartans kick off the tournament against Marshall at 9 a.m. Friday.
