GREENSBORO, NC – Six UNC Greensboro softball players have been named National Fastpitch Coaches Association Scholar-Athletes and the team has been named an NFCA All-Academic team for the 2007-08 season, UNCG coach Jennifer Herzig announced Tuesday.
Emily Akiyama, Carolyn Boyd, Kayla Hensley, Lyndsay Mouse, Laura Olenderski and Brandi Schnute all earned Scholar-Athlete status. To qualify for the honor, student-athletes must have at least a 3.5 GPA for the year in question.
In addition, with a team GPA of 3.24, UNCG was one of the NFCA's 101 All-Academic teams. The Spartans checked in at No. 40 nationally.
UNCG, which finished 23-33 overall and 7-11 in the Southern Conference last season, opens the 2009 campaign on Feb. 6 at the USF Louisville Slugger Tournament in Tampa, FL, against North Florida and South Florida.
