GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro softball coach Jennifer Herzig announced Thursday the schedule for the 2008 season, which is highlighted by an exhibition game with the USA National Team on its “Bound 4 Beijing” tour in April. The schedule also features five tournaments including the Southern Conference Tournament.
The Spartans open the season with two tournaments, starting in Jacksonville, FL, at the Jacksonville University Tournament Feb. 8-10. UNCG then comes home to UNCG Softball Stadium for the UNCG Spartan Classic on Feb. 15-17. The Spartans welcome Cleveland State, James Madison, Niagara, Maryland-Baltimore County and Central Michigan for the three-day tournament.
“I am extremely pleased with the schedule that we were able to put together,” said Herzig. “We have some great teams on our schedule. The National Team exhibition game will be a once in a lifetime experience for our players and coaching staff.”
The Spartans will also compete at the UNC Wilmington Tournament (Feb. 22-24), the East Carolina Pirate Clash (Feb. 29-March 2) and the Georgia Tech Buzz Classic (March 7-9).
The nonconference slate features a distinctly North Carolina flavor with road trips to North Carolina State and Charlotte and home dates against North Carolina, cross-town rival North Carolina A&T and East Carolina.
The Spartans will also travel to Virginia Tech, Liberty and Radford for non-conference twinbills.
UNCG opens Southern Conference action at Chattanooga on March 21. The Spartans will also travel for SoCon match-ups with Appalachian State (March 29-30) and College of Charleston (April 19-20).
The Spartans open SoCon home action April 5 when they host Western Carolina. UNCG also welcomes Georgia Southern (April 12-13), Elon (April 26-27) and Furman (May 3-4) to UNCG Softball Stadium.
The 2008 Southern Conference Softball Tournament will take place May 7-10 in Charleston, SC.
