Shaina Ervin named assistant softball coach

GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro head softball coach Jennifer Herzig announced Wednesday the hiring of former NC State standout Shaina Ervin as the Spartan’s assistant softball coach.

A native of Huntersville, NC, Ervin arrives at UNCG after a stellar career at North Carolina State. Ervin was the first-ever recruit to verbally commit to NC State and helped build the program into an ACC power by leading them to the 2006 ACC Championship in only the program’s third year of existence.

“I am very excited to be a member of the UNCG softball family,“ Ervin said, “I am grateful to Coach Herzig for allowing me the opportunity to continue to work with the sport that I love.”

Ervin, the 2006 ACC Tournament MVP, led her team to its first-ever ACC title and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. During her career, Ervin carried a 1.81 ERA in over 708 innings and she stands second in program history for wins (55), appearances (124), starts (105), complete games (72), shutouts (19) and strikeouts (704).

"I am extremely excited to announce the hiring of Shaina Ervin as the newest member of the UNC Greensboro Spartan softball coaching staff,” said head coach Jennifer Herzig.

"Shaina has had a great career at NC State. I feel very confident that her collegiate experience, in addition to her time with the Michigan Ice this summer, will make her an even better coach as she enters a new phase of her athletic career."

Ervin earned first team All-ACC honors in 2006 and was named to the NFCA All-Region second-team in 2005. As a junior, she went undefeated in conference action. In addition, during her freshman season, she tossed back-to-back no-hitters in appearances against Binghamton and Campbell.

She was also a standout in the classroom and was named to the ACC Honor Roll and NC State Dean’s List four times throughout her career. Ervin was also a 2004 NFCA Scholar-Athlete Award Recipient and she received an ACC Postgraduate Scholarship.

"Shaina possesses all of the qualities I truly believe a Spartan must have to be successful. She has tremendous work ethic both on the field and in the classroom, a passion for the game of softball that is absolutely contagious, and a great desire to help take the Spartan softball program to the top of the Southern Conference," Herzig said.

Since graduating form NC State, Ervin has entered the professional ranks and spent this summer competing with the Michigan Ice, a professional fastpitch team in Midland, MI.

Her UNCG duties will include primarily working with the Spartan pitching staff and outfield. She will also be involved in most daily operations of the team, including recruiting, monitoring academic progress and assisting in coordination of travel arrangements. She will assume her duties at UNCG on Monday, Aug. 27.
