Bonilla and the Puerto Rico National Team open Olympic qualifier with 1-1 record

VALENCIA, Venezuela – Former Spartan softball player Jennifer Bonilla and the Puerto Rico National team opened play in the 2007 Americas qualifier with a 1-1 record after recording a 4-3 win over Cuba and a 9-0 five-inning loss to host team Venezuela.

In its 4-3 win over Cuba, Puerto Rico was led by Linellis Santiago, who went 2-for-3 from the plate. Teammates Ailen Morales, Brenda Colon, Mirelis Torres and Zomaire Lozano each tallied one hit.

Jenna Lopez was in the circle for Puerto Rico and in eight innings allowed three runs on six hits and walked two.

Against Venezuela, Puerto Rico tallied four hits and was led by Morales, who was 2-for-3 from  the plate. Lozano and Davina Hernandez also recorded hits in the 9-0 loss.

The team will take on host Venezuela in its last round robin competition of the tournament on Wednesday. The tournament will then hold playoffs to determine who will earn the automatic berth.
