Bonilla and the Puerto Rico National Team play in Olympic qualifier

VALENCIA, Venezuela – Former Spartan softball player Jennifer Bonilla will suit up for the Puerto Rico National team in Valencia, Venezuela this week as the team attempts to qualify for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China at the Americas qualifier this week.

The team has spent the first three weeks of August training in Puerto Rico in preparation for this week’s tournament. The qualifier, which takes place from Aug. 19-26 will pit the Puerto Rico team against national teams from Venezuela, the Dominican Republic and Cuba. The winner of the tournament will earn a bid to the Olympics.

This is the second international tournament that Bonilla has participated in this summer since joining the team in early July. The Hope Mills, NC native traveled with the team to the Pan American games this past July where she started several games at first base.

The four-year starter at first base finished her career tied for No. 1 on UNCG’s all-time hits list with 227 hits and is ranked No. 2 on the career doubles list with 51 doubles.
