RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Former UNCG softball player Jennifer Bonilla has been playing a critical role with the Puerto Rico national softball team during the 2007 Pan American Games this week.
The softball competition, which was scheduled to being on Monday but was postponed due to weather and damage to several of the facilities, began on Wednesday, July 25. On the first day of competition, the team fell to Venezuela, 3-0. Bonilla entered the game in the top of the sixth inning at first base and recorded one putout and one assist in the loss.
Bonilla’s play in the first game earned her the starting nod for the following two games. The team fell to 0-3 in the round robin competition with a 6-3 loss to Canada and a 3-1 loss to Venezuela in the second day of action.
Against Canada, Bonilla started at first base and was 1-for-3 from the plate with one run scored and a team-high 10 putouts. The Hope Mills, NC, native had one at-bat in the loss to Argentina and recorded 10 putouts and one walk.
Through three games, the Puerto Rico team is batting .116 with eight hits and four runs scored. It has also tallied four doubles and three RBI.
The team concludes round-robin action today and will take on Brazil at 11 am (ET). The top four teams at the end of round-robin action will advance to two semifinals to determine the medal winners.
