Former softball player Jennifer Bonilla named to Puerto Rico National Team

GREENSBORO, NC – Former Spartan softball player Jennifer Bonilla was named to the Puerto Rico National Team after a weeklong tryout with the team last week in Miami, Fl. The Hope Mills, NC, native will compete with the team this summer as they try to secure a bid to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China.

The team will spend three weeks in early August training in Puerto Rico before playing its Olympic qualifier Aug. 18-26 in Valencia, Venezuela. In the four-team qualifier, Puerto Rico will play national teams from Venezuela, the Dominican Republic and Cuba. The winner of the tournament will earn a bid to the Olympics.

“It is a great honor to be representing Puerto Rico,” Bonilla said. “I feel very fortunate to be competing internationally and to be playing softball on such a high level with such talented players.”

Bonilla is joined on the national team by collegiate players from Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, UMass and South Dakota State.

The four-year starter at first base finished her career at UNCG tied for No. 1 on the all-time hits list with 227 hits and is ranked No. 2 on the career doubles list with 51 doubles.
