Greenway earns All-Southern Conference First Team honors

MT. PLESANT, SC – UNC Greensboro senior outfielder Mary Greenway earned her second consecutive All-Southern Conference First Team honor at the annual Southern Conference softball banquet on Wednesday night in Mt. Pleasant, SC.

She joins former Spartans Leigh Irwin, Penny Thompson and Jennifer Hubbard as a two-time All-Southern Conference first team performer and is the first since Hubbard who did it in 2002 and 2003.

Greenway, who is batting .330 for the season, set both the UNCG and Southern Conference single season record for stolen bases this season with 47, breaking the record she set of 41 last season. She is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation in stolen bases and is No. 17 nationally in triples.

The Roanoke, VA, native is leading the team in batting average, on base percentage, slugging percentage, stolen bases and triples. The outfielder is currently on a seven-game hitting streak and has had at least one stolen base in UNCG’s last five games.

Regular season champions Chattanooga led the way by taking three of the four individual awards. Sophomore Brooke Loudermilk earned her second consecutive Pitcher of the Year award while teammate Michelle Fuzzard was selected as the Freshman of the Year. UTC head coach Frank Reed was also selected by his peers as the league’s Coach of the Year. Earning Player of the Year honors was Georgia Southern junior third baseman Robyne Siliga.

Georgia Southern led the way with eight all-conference members, including four first-team and four second-team selections. Chattanooga had five players honored as did College of Charleston while Elon had three selections and Appalachian State had two. Furman, UNC Greensboro and Western Carolina each had one player honored by the coaches.

UNCG continues Southern Conference Tournament action on Thursday when they take on top-seeded Chattanooga. First pitch is scheduled for 3 pm at the College of Charleston’s Patriot’s Point Field.
