College of Charleston rallies in seventh inning for 2-1 win over UNCG
CHARLESTON, SC – The College of Charleston used two runs in the seventh inning to rally for a 2-1 win over the UNC Greensboro softball team at Patriots Point Softball field on Sunday.
UNCG (15-29, 2-10 SoCon) was led by upperclassmen Mary Greenway and Lyndsay Mouse. Greenway went 1-for-3 from the plate with a run scored while Mouse was 1-for-2 with an RBI on the afternoon.
Hannah Angel got her second start of the weekend and in 7.0 innings of work allowed two runs on five hits while striking out five. The Eastbend, NC native pitched her second complete game of the weekend and tallied 16 strikeouts on the weekend.
The teams went through four scoreless innings before the Spartans were able to push a run across the plate. Greenway hit a leadoff single to left center and was plated with a RBI double from Lyndsay Mouse to give UNCG a, 1-0 lead.
The Spartans' excellent defense combined with the pitching of Angel kept the Cougars off the board early, although they did have a chance in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs, Christal Kotchman slammed a triple to right field to put a runner in scoring position, but a pop out to left field from Tiffany Harmon ended the inning and the scoring threat.
College of Charleston started its rally in the home portion of the seventh with a leadoff home run to left field from Shannon Howard, which tied the game at 1-1. Kristie Shifflett followed Howard’s homer with a single to center field to give the Cougars a base runner. The hits kept coming for Charleston as Katie Nutaitis hit the Cougars' third consecutive single, which moved pinch-runner Alex Williams to second base.
The Cougars loaded the bases with no outs when Brittany Small reached on a fielder's choice and each of the runners advanced a base. Williams scored the game winner with a sacrifice fly from Terri Mesko, giving the Cougars the series and the game.
The Spartans will play their last nonconference game on Thursday when they take on the Charlotte 49ers. First pitch is set for 4 pm at Charlotte’s D.L. Phillips Softball Complex.
