GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro sophomore right handed pitched Amber Harrell has been named Southern Conference Pitcher of the Month for the month of February it was announced on Thursday. This is the first Southern Conference Player of the Month honor for Harrell.
The McDonough, GA, native helped lead UNCG to an 8-8 record throughout the month including wins over instate rivals, UNC Wilmington and Coastal Carolina. The Spartans also tallied a 7-6 tournament record throughout the month.
In 11 appearances and 10 games started, Harrell recorded a 5-4 record with a 1.53 ERA. In 64.0 innings pitched she allowed 20 runs on 42 hits and only 14 earned runs while striking out a team-high 78. Four of her five wins were shutouts coming against Jacksonville, Fordham, Maryland-Baltimore County and UNC Wilmington.
The sophomore is already climbing into the UNCG record book and currently ranks eighth in career strikeouts with 237 and twice this season has tallied three games of 10 or more strikeouts including a season-high 12 in a win over UNC Wilmington. She leads the pitching staff in ERA (1.90), opposing batter average (.202); innings pitched (92.0) and batters struck out (102).
The Spartan open Southern Conference action with a conference series against Chattanooga, March 21-22 before returning home to take on cross-town rival, North Carolina A&T on March 26.
