Vanessa Oakes named Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week

SPARTANBURG, SC – UNC Greensboro pitcher Vanessa Oakes was named Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday afternoon.

The senior right handed pitcher made two starts last week and twirled 13 innings of work as UNCG picked up a doubleheader win over St. Francis (PA) on Wednesday and went 3-1 with wins over St. Francis (PA), Bucknell and Norfolk State at the Elon Softball Tournament over the weekend.

She fanned 14 batters for the week and earned her first shutout victory of the season, an 8-0 win over Norfolk State on Sunday. Oakes has a 5-1 record on the season and has a 2.87 earned run average. In 38.0 innings pitched this season she has allowed 23 runs and has 35 strikeouts.

Oakes has made nine appearances this season and has started five games. She has pitched four complete games and has made four appearances in relief for the Spartans. 

Oakes led the team in every pitching category last season and currently ranks second on UNCG’s all-time single season strikeouts list with 165 strikeouts last season. The Wilmington, NC, native also ranks 10th in innings pitched (187.2) and ninth in appearances (36).

The Spartans are next in action Tuesday afternoon when they take on Longwood in a non-conference doubleheader. UNCG returns to UNCG Softball Stadium Wednesday when they host Radford in a doubleheader. Game one is set to start at 4 pm.
