Frizzell’s one-hitter gives Chattanooga a 5-0 win over UNCG

CHATTANOOGA, TN – Chattanooga junior pitcher Ashley Frizzell struck out eight and gave up just one hit to give the Lady Mocs a 5-0 win over UNC Greensboro in Southern Conference softball action at Frost Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Frizzell stuck out six hitters through the first three innings and had a no-hitter going until giving up a single to UNCG’s Kara Clouser in the top of the fifth with two outs. She also gave up two walks in the fifth to load the bases, but a diving catch in left ended the Spartans scoring threat.

Chattanooga got on the board in the first with three unearned runs. With two outs, Brittney Whittier doubled to left field to make it 1-0. An errant throw by the leftfielder on the play allowed two more runners to score and Chattanooga led 3-0.

Ashlan Clarkson gave UTC an insurance run in the fourth with a leadoff homerun to give the Lady Mocs a 4-0 cushion.

Vanessa Oakes started for UNCG and worked 3.1 innings, allowing five runs (two earned) and struck out five hitters. Hannah Angel entered with one out and the bases loaded in the fourth. She was able to work out of the jam by retiring the first two batters she faced. In all, she worked 2.2 innings without allowing a hit and stuck out four UTC hitters.
