Men's Cross Country and Track & Field Programs Receive NCAA Public Recognition Award
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's cross country and track
and field programs were recognized as NCAA Public Recognition Award
recipients for the NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) for
the 2011-12 academic year.
Our program being recognized by the NCAA for our APR score is
a great honor," head coach
Linh Nguyen said. "One of
my top objectives when I became head coach was to raise the level
of academic achievement within the program. We focused on
recruiting quality students to the program and I think we're seeing
the results of those efforts now."
This specific award is given each year to teams that posted
multiyear APRs in the top-10 percent of all squads for each sport.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each
semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete
on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and
graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic
performance.
"I can't say enough about the great kids that have come and pushed
us to new heights, not just athletically but academically," Nguyen
said. "At the end of the day, people know that if you come to UNCG,
you will leave with a high quality education and that's what we
want to be about. Our student-athletes are not only leaders on the
cross country course and track, but also in the classroom."
