GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG's men's and women's cross country teams start their 2012 season Friday at 5 p.m., at the Demon Deacon Quad in Winston-Salem.
"Tomorrow is a low key meet," head coach Linh Nguyen said. "It's actually a relay style meet so the athletes won't be running a standard distance for them, and it will actually be hard for them to determine how well they're doing. This is a good chance for us to see how the young kids are doing and how some of our returners are doing."
The men's relay teams for the opening meet are Dylan Belles and John Elwood, Taylor Day and Chris Murphy, Tyron Alston and Eric Williams, and Josh Crawford and Brandon Cain. The duos for the women are Kelly Montague and Meredith Hicks, Shannon Hall and Katlyn Ayers, and Emilee Hensel and Lydia Saina.
The Spartans will be led by senior Taylor Day (Cornelius, N.C./ Hopewell) who ran a personal best time of 26:17 placing him at No. 54 overall at the Southern Conference Championships in the 2011 season. Also leading the team is junior Kelly Montague (Garner, N.C./ West Johnston), who ran a personal best time of 18:34 for the 5,000m at the SoCon Championships, earning her 27th place overall last year.
