Thompson named SoCon Athlete of the Month
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference office announced on Friday that Joey Thompson has been selected as the men's cross country Athlete of the Month for the month of October. The athletes were nominated by each member institution and voted on by the conference office.
Thompson, a junior from Columbia, Md., ran times of 24:32, 24:20 and 24:39 for his three races on 8K courses in the month October. Each time was faster than the UNCG school record coming into the 2010 season, and it was also at least 17 seconds faster than his previous personal best.
He started his month off by finishing in 36th at the Greater Louisville Classic in a time of 24:32. He then came in fourth at Royal Cross Country Challenge, where he broke the school record with a time of 24:20.5.
He wrapped up his month of competition last weekend at the Southern Conference Championships by earning runner-up honors. His time of 24:39 earned him second place and first-team All-SoCon honors.
The Spartans will return to competition on Nov. 13 as they travel to Louisville, Ky., for the NCAA Southeast Regional Championship.
