GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG's Joey Thompson has been honored as the men's Southern Conference Runner of the week for his performance during the weekend of Oct. 15-16, the league office announced today.
It is Thompson's first time earning the honor this year after earning the same award twice last season. He earned the award once during cross country season and the other time during the indoor track season.
Thompson, a junior from Columbia, Md., broke the UNCG school record by nine seconds at the Royal Cross Country Challenge in Charlotte, N.C. His time of 24:20 on the 8K course was good enough for fourth overall in a very competitive field.
Thompson helped paced the Spartans to a second place team finish, just behind Division II powerhouse Queens University, which ranks No. 7 nationally in DII. Thompson is a business major with a 3.90 GPA.
The Spartans have a week off before the Southern Conference Championships on Oct. 30 in Boone, N.C.
