Thompson named Runner of the Week
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - UNC Greensboro sophomore Joey Thompson was been named the Southern Conference Men's Runner of the Week for his performance at the Lou Onesty Invitational Saturday, the league office announced Wednesday.
Thompson, a business major from Columbia, Md., placed seventh at the Lou Onesty Invitational, his first race of the season. His time of 25:23 is a new personal best, beating his previous time by 17 seconds and putting him in fourth place on UNCG's all-time list. The Spartans finished third at the Lou Onesty Invitational, ahead of George Mason, who is ranked No. 14 in the region.
Last season, Thompson earned many honors in his record-breaking season. He earned all-freshman honors in cross country as well as in the mile and 3,000-meters during the indoor track season. He was named to the All-SoCon team in the 3,000-meters in indoor track as well. At the outdoor championships, he was named All-SoCon and all-freshman in the 1,500-meters.
The Spartans return to action on Oct. 2 at the Charlotte Invitational.
