UNCG men picked fifth, women seventh in SoCon Cross Country polls

SPARTANBURG, SC -- UNC Greensboro's men's cross country team is picked to finish fifth in the Southern Conference and the women's team is picked seventh in the pre-season balloting of the league's coaches, which was announced Wednedsay.

The Southern Conference cross country head coaches have selected Appalachian State to again win the men’s 2006 title and Davidson to repeat its 2005 victory.

Davidson’s women beat out Chattanooga by one point for the preseason honor, getting seven first place votes and accumulating 94 points. Chattanooga had three first place votes and received 93 points to get second place. Appalachian State, who received one first place vote, is picked third with 84 points. Furman received 72 points taking fourth.  Elon is picked to finish fifth with 67 points and College of Charleston edges out UNC Greensboro with 48 points for sixth place.  

On the men’s side, Appalachian State was chosen to repeat as champions in the preseason poll tallying 81 points and receiving nine of ten first place votes. Chattanooga followed in at second with 67 points and one first place vote.  Furman is slated to finish third, followed by Davidson and UNC Greensboro.

The results of this year’s poll on the men’s side mimics the exact finish of the teams from last year. The only change in the standings predicted on the women’s side was College of Charleston overtaking UNC Greensboro for sixth.      

The 2006 Southern Conference Cross Country Championships will be held at Moccasin Bend in Chattanooga, TN on Saturday, October 28.
