STATESBORO, GA -- UNC Greensboro finish fifth in the men’s race and sixth in the women’s race at the 2005 Southern Conference Cross Country Championships on Sunday at Southern Links Golf Club.
The Spartan men were led by Nicolas Vaccaro’s 21st place finish. He crossed the line in 26:04.16, a personal best, followed by teammate Charles Gibson six-tenths of a second later in 22nd place. Gibson's time was also a personal best. Josh Wyatt finished 27th in 26:30.44.
The UNCG women were less by Jess Weber’s 18th place finish in a time of 19:03.42, a season best. Heidi Pinkerton was 28th for the Spartans, crossing the line in 19:30.75.
"Overall, I am very pleased with the performances," said UNCG coach Rachelle Roberts. "The guys ran aggressive and it paid off for them. We held off Western for 5th when they beat us just two weeks ago. We had several women who had to overcome injuries to compete this season and I was proud of their efforts on the course today."
Davidson edged Chattanooga for the women’s team championship. The Wildcats scored 46 points with three runners in the Top Five, while Chattanooga, led by individual champion Shannon Womack, scored 47 points. Womack finished the course in 16:53.47, more than 55 seconds in front of the next runner.
Appalachian State, with five runners in the Top 10, won the men’s team championship with 34 points. Chattanooga, led by individual champion Ian Mayne, finished second. Mayne won the race in a time of 24:37.25.
