GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG sophomore Paul Katam (Eldoret, Kenya/Sacho) was named the Southern Conference Men's Track Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday. Katam set the school record in the 5,000-meter race at the prestigious Flotrack Husky Classic last week at the Dempsey Indoor Track in Seattle
Katam finished fourth in his heat as he ran at the front of the pack for the majority of the race. He posted a time of 14:04.03, besting his previous school record by an astounding 15-plus seconds, which was also the school-record time. His previous time of 14:19.86 was set last year at the Meyo Invitational.
Katam has posted a strong start to his indoor track season as he was named the SoCon Track Athlete of the Month in January. He won the Wake Forest Invitation mile run with a personal-best time of 4:11.90 while following that up with a personal-best time of 8:11.56 in the 3,000-meter race at the Hokie Invitational.
Katam and the Spartans return to action at the 2013 Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Feb. 23-24 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
